Future of EU and on alternative forms of integration in Central Europe

More about the research objective

The European Union (EU) was founded as a peace formula after World War II, aiming to prevent future conflicts through economic cooperation, particularly in energy. Initially starting with six countries, it has grown to 27 members. However, over time, EU integration has become more centralized, moving towards a federation of European states with expanded roles in foreign affairs, justice, and human rights. This shift has led to ideological divisions and a weakening of the EU's original peace-building goals. As a result, alternative forms of cooperation, such as the Three Seas Initiative, which will be the focus of the research group, have emerged. Launched in 2015, this initiative unites 13 Central and Eastern European countries to enhance regional cooperation in energy, transport, and digital communication, aiming to boost competitiveness and safety.
The initiative seeks to complement, not replace, the EU, advocating for the influence of these nations to restore the EU's original goals of law, democracy, and Christian values. Research group members will, inter alia, analyse the transformation of the justice system in the Three Seas countries, the legal possibilities for macro-regional development of the region of the Three Seas Initiative and its historical, geopolitical and local government dimensions. Furthermore, the group will investigate the Three Seas Initiative as a form of cooperation within the European Union, the road to freedom from communist rule in the Three Seas countries, and the axiological foundation, and community of values of countries from the area.
