Introduction

Dr Robert Derewenda (born 14 January 1977 in Tomaszów Mazowiecki) – Polish historian, academic teacher, local government official, Director of the IPN Branch in Lublin. In 2001, he completed his studies with a thesis entitled “The Struggle of the Communist Authorities against the Oasis ‘Light-Life’ Movement in 1963–1981”. In 2007, he was awarded a PhD in the humanities, specialising in history, on the basis of a dissertation entitled “The History of the ‘Light-Life’ Movement in 1950–1985”. From 2001 to 2003, he co-established the Main Archive of the ‘Light-Life’ Movement. Between 2004 and 2012, he served as Director of the Main Archive, a department of the Institute of Father Franciszek Blachnicki. From 2012 to 2022, he was Director of the Institute of Father Franciszek Blachnicki. From 2008 to 2021, he taught history and social studies at the Private Schools of Queen Jadwiga in Lublin. Between 2017 and 2019, he also taught history at the I Liceum Ogólnokształcące (First General Secondary School) in Lublin. In 2015, he completed postgraduate studies in educational management. In 2021, he was a member of the Ministry of Education and Science teams responsible for developing the curricula for the subjects: history, History and the Present, and social studies

He is a member of the ‘Light-Life’ Movement. Between 2006 and 2022, he was a member of the Central Diakonia of Unity of the ‘Light-Life’ Movement, serving as an elected delegate to the Congregation of the Diakonia. He is an academic staff member in the Department of Source Studies, Archival Studies, and History Didactics at the Institute of History, John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin. He engages in popularising history through participation in television and radio programmes, documentary films, and meetings with both young people and adults. Since January 2022, he has been the Director of the Lublin Branch of the Institute of National Remembrance (IPN). He is actively involved in social affairs. He is serving his second term as a councillor in the Lublin City Council. In the 2024 local elections, he was a candidate for Mayor of Lublin.
