Transnational migration crime

More about the research objective

The Migration and Cross-border Crime Research Unit aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of the phenomenon of migrant crime from the perspective of Polish, EU and international law. Illegal migration is linked to a number of legal problems. Firstly, the criminalisation of migration crime not only stems from national criminal law and criminal policy, but also depends on EU and international law.
The research group will focus on discussing conditions under EU law, including requirements for legal entry into EU Member States. Secondly, the EU retains partial competence to harmonise criminal law. It is therefore worth monitoring the extent and nature of EU competence in this area. Thirdly, migrant crime is also linked to other phenomena such as corruption and money laundering. The project will therefore also investigate how international migrant crime may be influenced by corrupt criminal behaviour and criminal behaviour linked to the activities of organised criminal groups. The aim of the research is to establish the extent and mechanisms of money laundering associated with migration-related crime, and current practices for identifying and prosecuting this type of crime.
