SUP Workshop – Dr. Gregor Dugar

On June 10-11, the Central European Academy had the honour of hosting Associate Professor Gregor Dugar, a distinguished expert in financial law, corporate law, commercial contract law, and property law, who delivered a lecture titled “Decentralized Autonomous Organizations.”

His lecture spanned two days, each addressing distinct but interrelated themes within the broader context of decentralized governance and emerging technologies.

On the first day, Professor Dugar examined the potential of DAOs in facilitating the intergenerational transfer of family businesses. He highlighted the limitations of traditional succession models and explored how DAOs, through smart contract governance, can offer more transparent, equitable, and adaptable frameworks for managing ownership and decision-making across generations. The presentation emphasized how decentralized structures can mitigate internal conflicts and enhance long-term strategic planning, particularly in closely held enterprises.

The second day shifted focus toward the legal and regulatory implications of cryptocurrencies. Professor Dugar provided a nuanced overview of the evolving legal landscape surrounding digital assets, including challenges related to investor protection, market volatility, and jurisdictional inconsistencies. He supported his analysis with practical examples illustrating how regulatory uncertainty can impact investment decisions, compliance efforts, and risk management strategies. Notably, he discussed recent legal precedents and enforcement actions that underscore the urgency for coherent legal frameworks governing decentralized financial instruments.

Throughout both sessions, Professor Dugar maintained a balance between theoretical insight and practical relevance, drawing on interdisciplinary perspectives from corporate law, technology, and finance. His ability to contextualize complex issues within real-world scenarios contributed to a compelling and thought-provoking discussion.
