The Central European Academy is deeply saddened by the passing of Professor Tadeusz Smyczyński, a distinguished Polish scholar of family law and children’s rights, who died on 31 October 2026 at the age of 88.
Professor Smyczyński leaves a lasting scholarly legacy through his contribution to the drafting of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and his lifelong work on the child as a holder of rights and the protection of those rights. A selection of his writings appears alongside studies by Professor Marek Andrzejewski in Human Rights – The Rights of the Child, published by CEA Publishing in 2025 as part of the Quintessence Monographs Series. The volume also offers a deeply personal tribute to his life and work, expressing a former student’s gratitude and sharing memories of a scholarly and personal bond with his mentor spanning several decades.
The Academy honours Professor Smyczyński’s memory with respect and gratitude and extends its sincere condolences to his family, loved ones, students and colleagues.
