European Legal Values: Values, Ideas and Intellectual Heritage in Legal Scholarship is an international scientific conference organized by the Central European Academy of the University of Miskolc within the framework of the European Legal Values research project conducted by the St. Hedwig Research Group. The conference is devoted to distinguished scholars whose work in legal and related sciences was grounded in axiology and in the conviction that values are indispensable for understanding, interpreting, and developing the law. Particular attention will be given to the intellectual legacy of Professor Zbigniew Cieślak, the late Professor Grzegorz Jędrejek and the late Professor Lech Morawski, whose reflections on public law, civil and family law and the theory of law and the foundations of the state continue to shape contemporary legal scholarship. A distinctive feature of the conference is that the scholarly achievements and intellectual heritage of these eminent jurists will be presented and discussed by their former students, collaborators, and academic successors. Through their contributions, the conference seeks not only to revisit the ideas developed by these scholars but also to demonstrate their continuing relevance for contemporary legal discourse and research. The rationale for this discussion lies in the growing need to reassess the role of values in legal scholarship and practice in an era marked by profound social, political, and technological transformations. The conference will therefore examine how axiological foundations inform legal reasoning, public institutions, and the interpretation of law across different branches of legal science. The individual perspectives emerging from the presentations will subsequently be brought together during the concluding roundtable discussion entitled Legal Values and Axiology, Morality, Theory of Law, Religion, and Administration. This debate will provide an opportunity to confront and synthesize the various approaches presented throughout the conference, mapping the role of values across the principal domains of legal scholarship and exploring their significance for the future development of law and legal thought.
