This May, CEA organised the second edition of the Slovak Cultural Evening - an evening dedicated to Slovakia, a country of castles and mountains, where a language is spoken whose letters look like they come from an advanced encryption system.
Slovakia may not be the biggest country in the world, but it certainly knows how to make an impression. From the towering peaks of the High Tatras to medieval towns and mysterious caves, this little gem in the heart of Europe has a lot to offer, along with a formidable-looking but surprisingly melodic language (if you don't already stumble across č, š and ž). It's also home to legendary figures such as Peter Sagan, who made cycling look effortless, not to mention inventors like Jozef Murgaš, who helped develop wireless communications, and Štefan Banič, who came up with an early parachute (because who doesn't love jumping out of planes for science?).
But this evening was not just about the facts on Wikipedia. We also took a closer look at Slovakia's legal system, met some of its most important legal minds, and tried to answer the age-old question: why do Slovaks have so many diacritics, and can anyone pronounce all the letters in “štvrť” correctly? There was music, lively conversation and even a surprise or two, so the evening was full of fun and experiences!
