Human Rights Days I is the first annual international human rights conference organised by the Central European Academy. The opening conference of the annual Human Rights Days series was held to mark the 75th anniversary of the signing of the European Convention on Human Rights in Rome. The Convention has been a cornerstone of human rights protection in Europe since its adoption in 1950 and its entry into force in 1953, but the interpretation of the rights it guarantees has evolved considerably thanks to the development of the case law of the European Court of Human Rights.
Over the past decades, the Court has faced several unprecedented challenges that required it to interpret the Convention as a living instrument in the light of present-day conditions. This dynamic approach has allowed the Court to address emerging human rights issues, including those arising from technological advancements, environmental concerns, and evolving societal norms. Through its case law, the Court has not only attempted to reinforce fundamental rights but also to adapt its interpretations to ensure the Convention remains relevant in an ever-changing legal and geopolitical landscape.

As the European human rights system faces new challenges, the role of the Court of Justice remains crucial. The Human Rights Days I conference provided a platform for distinguished academics, young scholars and practitioners to reflect on these developments and discuss the future of human rights protection in Europe. The opening conference, which took place on 4-5 April 2025, was of particular importance as the speakers were judges of the Court of Justice. It is therefore an honour for the Central European Academy to organise such an illustrious and high-level event in Budapest on the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the European Convention on Human Rights.
