"The entire programme is well organized, with a clear schedule"

Introduction

My name is Dimitrij Nastevski, and I am a first-year PhD student at the Central European Academy of the University of Miskolc. Prior to this, I worked as a lawyer at a law firm in North Macedonia.

How was the application process?

The application process was smooth as we were timely informed for the needed materials and documents and with the help from my supervisor Tanja Karakamiseva everything went appropriately.

How did the move go?

One part was challenging having in mind that I couldnt come physically to Budapest to review different flats. However, I had luck finding on the platforms great proffesional which was renting flat and we agreed quickly and he welcomed me and introduced the neighbor and everyting was fine.

Where do you see yourself in a few years, and how will CEA UM help you achieve this?

In the coming years, I see myself primarily in academia. During my PhD studies, I aim to focus on academic development by actively participating in summer schools, training programmes, and international conferences. My main priority during this period is to strengthen my research profile and academic skills.

After completing my doctoral studies and defending my dissertation, I would very much like to continue collaborating with the network of the Central European Academy of the University of Miskolc (CEA UM), whether through joint research, academic publications, or teaching activities. At the same time, I am also open to legal practice or working in relevant institutions, especially if it provides an opportunity to further develop my Hungarian language skills.

Was there anything you were worried about before you came here?

Based on my experiences at the CEA UM open day, I gained a clear understanding of the study programme and had the opportunity to meet many supportive and friendly people, which was very reassuring for me, so in this regard, I had no concerns at all. My only minor worry was adapting to a new city, but this proved unfounded, as the public transport system and the city’s overall organisation made the transition smooth and easy.

What is everyday life like at the academy?

Everyday life at the Academy offers a supportive environment, with ambitious colleagues and professors who are fully committed to sharing their rich knowledge and experience through various workshops and conferences. The Programme Managers and the HR Department are exceptionally responsive and supportive with regard to any questions, as well as in ensuring smooth day-to-day functioning.

How much does CEA UM support students professionally?

As an organisation, the CEA UM fully supports the resolution of any issues or misunderstandings that arise. The weekly coordination meetings with the professional staff are extremely constructive and provide everyone with the opportunity to raise concerns and speak openly, which is essential for continuous development and reflects a truly democratic approach.

How do you find time for research?

The entire programme is well organized, with a clear schedule of activities and timely communication regarding conferences and deadlines, which makes it easier to plan work efficiently and dedicate sufficient time to research.

What is it like to live in Budapest?

Living in Budapest is a great experience. It is a vibrant and dynamic city, rich in history and culture, with countless places to visit, endless museums, and impressive architectural masterpieces, including notable Baroque buildings alongside Neo-Gothic landmarks.

How do you see the grant financially?

I see the grant as financially adequate and well-structured. It provides a stable basis for covering living expenses and allows me to focus on my research and academic development without any financial pressure.

Where do you see yourself in 5-10 years?

In the next 5–10 years, I see myself primarily in academia, either as a researcher or a lecturer, however, I remain open to other professional opportunities where I could apply my academic background and research experience.

Who would you recommend the CEA UM Junior Programme to?

I would highly recommend this opportunity to colleagues completing their master's studies, as well as to those working in law offices, who are ambitious, eager to engage in research, and looking to grow professionally.

Is it a disadvantage that the Academy is still so young?

I do not see it as a disadvantage; rather, it is a challenge that is successfully managed! Considering the background and experience of the professors, directors, and staff, the program is well-promoted publicly and already highly recognized!

What has been your best experience at CEA UM so far?

Besides the enriching conferences—especially the ASCEA Conference, where I had the chance to meet many outstanding researchers—what stands out even more are the cultural evenings. They allow us to experience different cultures, sing their songs, dance traditional dances, and broaden our horizons while deepening our connections!

What message do you have for future juniors?

Believe in yourself, work hard, and boldly move forward toward your goals – the CEA UM will support you every step of the way!
