More about work

Emőd Veress’s academic career is based on the intersection of classical dogmatic civil law and the historical-comparative method. His works feature both a precise analysis of norms (particularly in relation to contract law and company law) and an examination of the historical stratification of private law institutions, with the aim of making today’s legal developments understandable in the context of the region’s own traditions and the broader European context.
One of the strong themes of his oeuvre is the exploration of the history of modern private law and codification. A prominent example of this is his monograph entitled „Chapters from the History of Hungarian Private Law Codification: A European Perspective” (2022). He is particularly interested in the relationship between totalitarian dictatorships and civil law. Another important area of focus is the analysis of the borderline areas of contract and company law, with particular regard to long-term cooperation, share and company structures, and the „dynamics” of business relationships. This includes, among others, his monographs entitled „The Syndicate Agreement” (2020) and „The Share as a Security” (2019), as well as his editorial and authorial work that strengthens the international comparative perspective, such as the volume „Contract Law in East Central Europe” (2022). His international presence and regional focus are well demonstrated by the fact that he is the author of several important Romanian-language textbooks and monographs..

His teaching and scientific organization activities are closely linked to his involvement in the scientific community: he participates in the editorial work of several journals (e.g., Erdélyi Jogélet, Jogtudományi Közlöny, Közjegyzők Közlönye in Hungarian, and Central European Journal of Comparative Law, Law, Identity and Values, and Acta Universitatis Sapientiae. Legal Studies in English). In Italy, he is a member of the international scientific council of the journal Etica e giustizia: rivista di cultura giuridica; and the scientific council of the Giustizia processo cultura book series (Giuffrè Francis Lefebvre editore)..

In recognition of his scientific achievements, he received the Academic Award (Hungarian Academy of Sciences) in 2024 for his research results published in more than three hundred papers. In 2025, he was also awarded the Arany János Medal, and previously received the Knight’s Cross of the Hungarian Order of Merit (2016). He also has experience as a lawyer and arbitrator..
