Tamás Csiki Varga is senior research fellow at the John Lukacs Institute for Politics and Strategy of Ludovika – University of Public Service (Budapest, Hungary). Previously, he was policy analyst at the Institute for Strategic and Defense Studies, the background think tank of the Hungarian Ministry of Defense, for 14 years. At both institutions he has been conducting security and defense policy analysis.

His research focuses on European security and defense, encompassing NATO and U.S. grand strategy, the defense policy of individual European countries (e.g. Germany), Central European defense cooperation, as well as Hungarian security and defense policy. As an author or contributor to more than 200 publications, including 9 books, and 22 book chapters in security and defense, his expertise is backed by an established network of scholars in the field. At the strategic level he was a participant in formulating national security and defense strategies, as well as contributing to various strategic foresight analysis processes for Hungary and NATO. In 2024, his research focus is European defense industrial cooperation, the security and defense policy implications of Hungary’s EU Presidency, and the effects of Russia’s aggression to Ukraine on the armed forces modernization programs of Central European countries. His latest major upcoming publication is ‘Hungary’s defense policy in the 21st century’ (Magyarország védelempolitikája a 21. században), co-authored by Péter Tálas – a monograph outlining the trends and strategic processes formulating Hungarian defense in national and allied (NATO, EU) frameworks.
