Freedom of expression and media pluralism

More about the research objective

"The Impact of Digital Platforms and Social Media on Freedom of Expression and Pluralism" focused on a number of pressing issues, including the inadequacy of the state in dealing with online censorship and fake news, the lack of an adequate legal framework to address these issues, and the lack of clear liability rules for internet organisations.
They also looked at the easy decision making of portals and social media in content management and how these platforms have influenced changes in the concept of freedom of expression, affecting the quality of communication. The group's findings highlighted the need for an intelligent legal liability framework for fake news and criticised the interpretation of EU law and the case law of the Court of Justice of the European Union protecting freedom of expression. They proposed ways to prevent discrimination and disinformation campaigns in cyberspace and argued for the creation of uniform international standards to protect freedom and pluralism of expression online. They also stressed the importance of holding private companies accountable to legal standards and ensuring clear procedures for content censorship and prosecution of fake news. Their work was particularly relevant in the Central European context, emphasising the protection of European values, democracy, human rights and the rule of law in the digital age. They stressed the importance of upholding the traditional understanding of freedom of expression and ensuring that new legislation effectively tackles pseudo-news and internet censorship. The aim of the group's research was to disrupt the frivolous activities of portals and social media by enforcing respect for legal standards recognised by national and international law.
