Freedom of conscience and religion in Europe

More about the research objective

The debate on the presence of religious symbols in public spaces is often of great emotional intensity and reflects the proportion of fundamental values in European culture and civilisation. It has gained momentum in recent years and undoubtedly requires a proper settlement, which could be useful for legal arguments. For this reason, a group of experts from Croatia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Serbia, Slovakia and Slovenia was appointed to examine the issue of freedom of conscience and religion.
The main results of the research team's work are: the first international comparative study of the legal aspects of the presence of religious symbols in public spaces in seven Central European countries, and very valuable conclusions and de lege ferenda postulates in the field of the protection of religious freedom. The use of religious symbols in public spaces is generally not prohibited and their meaning often goes beyond the religious dimension. It turns out, however, that the problem in the Central European countries with regard to the protection of religious freedom (including the display of religious symbols in public places) is not the law or the lack of it, but its proper application. One of the main findings of the study is the publication Religious Symbols in Public Places. Analysis of selected Central European countries".
